Helicopter Information
As a result of the Democratic National Convention that will take place in Chicago this August, the City of Chicago received federal funding to acquire an aerial surveillance police helicopter. This federally funded Bell 429 Helicopter is valued at $11 million. The helicopter will be used during the Democratic National Convention, and it will remain in the Chicago Police Department’s fleet once the convention ends.
A new helicopter is an invaluable resource to assist police with apprehending suspects during the rise of carjackings and robberies. Utilizing helicopters keeps officers from having to engage in dangerous car chases during pursuits. Instead, helicopters follow targets and alert ground patrols once they have stopped. The helicopter will come with six radio bands which will allow it to monitor six frequencies at the same time, enabling constant communication with those on the ground. This technology is essential for the modernization of the Chicago Police Department.
